Over the past month or so, I’ve been bouncing around Asia (Korea, Singapore, Thailand, soon Hong Kong). One of my favorite things to do while traveling is simply to wander, explore the city, find some unexpected encounters and places. Recently I’ve been exploring some location based games, and of course when you think about location you think about Pokémon Go or Ingress both excellent games!
After testing many different games, even a web3 walking game called Moonwalk Fitness where you can earn money if you actually walk the amount you said you were going to, pretty fun!
But this post is about another game called WalkScape, think of RuneScape games, but instead of sitting in front of your computer for hours grinding for that rare loot, all that you need to do is walk. Think of a game that runs on ticks, but each tick is a step, and that’s all. Similar to RS, you have all your skills you need to level till you reach level 99. The best thing is that you don’t really need to be looking at your phone while you walk.
Say you want to smith some swords. First, you’ll need wood. You send your character off to chop trees, then put your phone away and go about your day. When you check back later, your inventory is full of logs, ready for the next task.
The game is still in beta, you can start playing it if you contibute to their Patreon account, really worth it in my in my opinion! There will be a complete game restart once it goes fully out of beta, so now it’s a good time to test the waters and learn how to play the game! I started the game not too long ago, and it has already tracked almost half a million steps 😮, (this is walking around the city, and not on a on a treadmil).

Recently the developers of the game released a simple API to fetch user stats. The API is still in early stage, but was enough to put together a simple website called WalkStats where you can check other user data, and more yours too. I created this tool so that I have a better history of all my tasks and growth. Once the API has more functionalities, I will also make sure to implement them.
